5 Duas for the New Year: How Muslim Families Can Start the Year with Purpose and Faith

The start of a new year is a great opportunity to ask ourselves: What do we want this year to look like? It isn’t just about setting goals and resolutions. It’s about renewing our intentions and realigning our hearts. It’s about strengthening our connection with Allah and feeding our souls. And making sincere duas for the new year—asking Allah for His bounty and help—is the first step to answering that question.

Duas are crucial for translating intentions into action. And Allah did not leave us searching for the right words to ask Him. The Qur’an and Sunnah hold a vast treasure of powerful supplications for every aspect of human life. And many of them are perfect duas for the new year—prayers that ask for everything fresh beginnings need: spiritual growth, protection, security, steadfastness, faith, and khayr (goodness) in all its forms.

Here are 5 of our favourite new-year duas. Recite them yourself, teach them to your children, and make it a family tradition to return to these duas not just every year, but every single day.

1. The Islamic New Year Dua: What to Say When the New Moon Appears

The dua: اللهم أهله علينا بالأمن والإيمان والسلامة والإسلام، ربي وربك الله، هلال رشد وخير

Transliteration: Allahumma ahillahu 'alayna bil-amni wal-iman, was-salamati wal-Islam. Rabbi wa rabbuk-Allah, hilalu rushdin wa khayr

Meaning: “O Allah, let this moon appear on us with security and Iman; with safety and Islam. (O moon!) Your Rubb and mine is Allah. May this moon be bringing guidance and good” (Riyad as-Salihin 1228).

If you’re looking for one dua specifically for the new year, this is the one. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught us to recite this dua whenever a new moon is sighted, which means this dua can be made every single month. It's the one you need when teaching your children what to say at new year in Islam.

Memorizing this dua for the new year and remembering to make it every month can turn every New Year’s Eve into a warm family moment. Imagine stepping outside with your family, searching for the new moon in the night sky, your children lighting up with excitement on spotting the moon, and all of you reciting this dua together. Even if you don't sight the moon yourself, you can recite this Islamic new year dua as soon as you're notified the new month or year has begun.

This simple act not only brings our hearts together; it also  reconnects us with nature (a practice long forgotten) and teaches our children that we begin everything in life with Allah’s name, seeking His help at every step.

2. Dua for Steadfastness in Faith

The dua: يا مقلب القلوب ثبت قلبي على دينك

Transliteration: Ya Muqallibel qulub, thabbit qalbi 'ala dinik.

Meaning: “O Controller of the hearts, make my heart steadfast in Your religion.”

We all know that feeling of starting the new year with enthusiasm—“I’ll read the Qur’an every morning”; “I’ll pray tahajjud every night.” But only a few weeks into the new year, our devotion starts to fade. Routine takes over again. Life gets busy. And we put our resolutions on hold till next year. That’s exactly why we need to make this special dua for the new year. We need to ask Allah for steadfastness in faith with a present heart and a focused mind, not just recite the words.

This is the supplication that Umm Salamah (RA) said the Prophet (ﷺ) used to make frequently at home (Riyad as-Salihin 1489). Imagine the best of all creation—the perfect human being (ﷺ) whose devotion to God is unmatched—asking Allah repeatedly to keep his heart firm on His religion. If the Prophet (ﷺ) needed this supplication, how much more do we need it?

3. Dua for Safety in the New Year: A Supplication the Prophet (ﷺ) Repeatedly Emphasized

The dua: اللهم إني أسألك العفو والعافية في الدنيا والآخرة

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as'aluk-al-'afwa wal-'afiyah fid-dunya wal-akhirah.

Meaning: “O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter.”

This may look like a simple dua. But many of us aren’t aware of the vast meaning of the word ‘afiyah. The truth is that this single short dua encompasses everything we need in this life and the next: physical health; sufficient provision; and protection from calamity, hardship, sins, and distress. If you’re a parent, this is the dua you need in those quiet moments of the night when you’re praying for your children’s complete physical and spiritual wellbeing.

A new year is the perfect time to seek Allah’s protection for the coming days, to ask Him for a year of peace, security, and safety for our families. That’s why we think your list of duas for the new year should include this supplication that the Prophet (ﷺ) taught his uncle repeatedly.

When Al-`Abbas bin `Abdul-Muttalib (RA) asked the Messenger (ﷺ) of Allah to teach him a supplication, he (ﷺ) told him to beg Allah for ‘afiyah. After some days, `Abbas bin `Abdul-Muttalib (RA) asked him for another dua and the Prophet (ﷺ) again advised him, “O Al-`Abbas, the uncle of the Messenger of Allah! Beseech Allah to give you safety (al-`afiyah ) in this life and in the hereafter” (Riyad as-Salihin 1488). If the Prophet (ﷺ) insisted so much on making this dua often, we should too. It is one of the best duas for the new year—short, easy to memorize, and covering every aspect of our needs.

4. Dua for Allah’s Love

The dua: اللهم إني أسألك حبك، وحب من يحبك، والعمل الذي يبلغني حبك، اللهم اجعل حبك أحب إلى من نفسي، وأهلي، ومن الماء البارد

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbak, wa hubba man yuhibbuk, wal-'amala-lladhi yuballi-ghuni hubbak. Allahumma-j'al hubbaka ahabba ilayya min nafsi wa ahli wa minal-ma'il-barid.

Meaning: “O Allah! I ask You for Your Love, the love of those who love You, and deeds which will cause me to attain Your Love. O Allah! Make Your Love dearer to me than myself, my family, and cold water” (Riyad as-Salihin 1490).

Ask yourself this: What do you really want for yourself (or your children) the most this year? Good health? Barakah in rizq? Success in school? A dream job? Sufficient wealth? Happiness and peace? These are the things we ask Allah for on every special occasion like Ramadan, new year, or hajj. But too often, our new year duas miss the most important thing of all—Allah’s love. And this supplication of Prophet Dawud (AS) is one of the most beautiful duas to ask Allah for just that.

This is the dua to make for what all of us quietly want for our families. It asks for Allah’s love; the kind of love that makes children get up for fajr not because they have to, but because they genuinely want to please Allah. The kind that transforms the way we pray, the way we treat others, and how we perceive the world around us. In our duas for the new year, Let’s make this special supplication a part of our duas for the new year. Let’s use these Prophetic words and ask Allah to fill our hearts with His love.

5. One Dua for New Year That Covers Everything: The Prophet's ﷺ Gift to Us

The dua:

Transliteration: Allahumma inni as'aluka min khayri ma sa'alaka minhu nabiyyuka Muhammadun salla-Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam, wa a'udhu bika min sharri masta'adha minhu nabiyyuka Muhammadun salla-Allahu 'alayhi wa sallam. Wa anta-l-musta'an, wa 'alayka-l-balagh, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

Meaning: “O Allah, I beg to You the good which Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) begged of You; and I seek refuge in You from the evil wherefrom Your Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) sought refuge. You are the One from Whom help is sought and Yours is the responsibility to communicate (the truth). There is no power or strength except with Allah the Exalted, the Great” (Riyad as-Salihin 1492).

We love this one. And we think you will too.

Have you ever felt a little overwhelmed by how many duas there are in the Sunnah? So many beautiful supplications that we can relate to—and it feels impossible to memorize every single one. The Companions felt the same way. When they told the Prophet ﷺ they did not remember many of the duas he (ﷺ) used to make, he ﷺ gave them this—a single comprehensive supplication, a master key to all the Sunnah duas we want to make but might not find the time for. It definitely deserves a spot on our best duas for the new year list.

If you’re ever too busy in the hustle of life, just make this one dua for the new year from the depths of your heart, and it will cover everything you need to ask for inshaAllah.

Making These New Year Duas a Family Tradition

These 5 duas for the new year were not selected at random. We chose them because they encompass everything you need when planning a fresh beginning: faith, health, wealth, peace, security, steadfastness, and—most importantly—the love of Allah. There are many other supplications in the Qur’an and Sunnah that you may use as new year duas depending on your specific needs and personal preferences.

Make it a family tradition to recite these duas for the new year and set goals together. Ask everyone to explore other duas from the Qur’an and Sunnah and select one for their personal goals for the new year. Help children enjoy this spiritual tradition for the new year by asking them to create colourful dua cards for their personal new year dua. Tell them they can make their dua for new year in Arabic or in their own language if that helps them feel more emotionally connected.

Remember: the best duas for the new year are the ones that stay with us long after New Year’s Eve. They transform us. They act as a reminder of the enthusiasm we had at the start of the year. They become a permanent part of our routine. So don’t just save these duas for a special occasion. Recite them daily and let them bring barakah into your life. Teach them to your children. Let this be the year you make at least one of these duas a daily practice.

Frequently-Asked Questions About Duas for the New Year

Q: Are there specific duas for the new year in Islam?

A: While there is no single obligatory new year dua, the Prophet ﷺ taught us a beautiful supplication for sighting the new moon. This dua can be recited at the start of the new lunar year or month as soon as the moon is sighted:

اللهم أهله علينا بالأمن والإيمان والسلامة والإسلام، ربي وربك الله، هلال رشد وخير

Q: Can I make dua for the new year in English or my own language?

A: Absolutely. You can recite the dua for new year in Arabic or in any other language. Dua is that form of ibadah where a believer can speak their heart out and connect with Allah on a deeply emotional level. You can ask for anything your heart desires in any language. Allah understands all languages and responds even to the silent prayers of the heart. The best practice for Sunnah duas like the new year dua is to recite the Arabic supplication first and then make dua in your own words.

Q: When is the best time to recite the Islamic new-year dua?

A: The dua for the new moon is ideally recited when you first sight or are notified of the new crescent. For the Islamic New Year specifically, this falls at the start of Muharram. However, other duas in this list can be recited at any time, morning or evening, throughout the year. You do not need to limit them to special occasions.

Q: What should Muslims say or do at the new year?

A: At the start of a new year, Muslims can recite the dua for sighting the new moon, reflect on the past year, and renew their intentions for spiritual growth and closeness to Allah. However, self-assessment and continuous effort for the akhirah is not something limited to the new year. Unlike worldly ambitions for the new year, a Muslim must set daily goals and remain consistent in their efforts to please Allah.
