Beautifully written and illustrated books! Ruqa-ya's Bookshelf has filled a huge void in our community by bringing Muslim children's books with moral values that children actually enjoy reading and listening to.
- Hina Salim

Both my 5 and 6 year old love this story!!! My 6 year old gets bored easily but this book that keeps him interested. The pictures go so well with the story and we love cats. We couldn't be more pleased. Look forward to adding more reviews on the other books and hope to eventually collect them all.

Kausar

This book is almost wonderful! Part of my lovely collection. Teaches children to be honest

-

Anam

Loved the morals of the story..a good lesson for the kids to learn..and a Sunnah to be followed..!!

So I grew up in Kuwait and this book reminds me so much of my childhood. The watchman, the cats, baklava and even my mother leaving for work in the morning with us and coming back around the same time in the afternoon. Very well written. My children ages 10, 6 and 3 love this book and want to read it over and over and then ask me to tell them my childhood stories.

-

Najia Shoukat

This book is perfection, from the illustrations, moral of the story about honesty and the creativity (the baklava storm and sticky syrup amuses us all)! We love all the Ruqaya's Bookshelf books we own and will continue to purchase more of them! I like to think of all the books as the Islamic version and style of the Robert Munsch books I read growing up, awesome illustrations and funny stories except these books have fantastic morals as well!

-

Juweria

My boys love this story, as they do all of Ruqaya's Bookshelf books! We love the Arabic references and the illustrations, but most importantly, I love using it to discuss honesty and how to get out of a bind. It's a great example of forgiveness and how children can accept that everyone makes mistakes, but they can easily be rectified.

-

Tuqa

We received it yesterday. And my son was very excited to see it. He was captivated as i read it to him. In the middle I stopped for a second to catch my breath, and he nudged me to keep reading. Personally I loved the lesson taught in the story in such an interesting manner. I'm happy I bought this book.

-

Unaiza

My son truly loves all the books I have purchased from Ruqaya's Bookshelf. Wonderful selection of diverse books that are truly relatable for Muslim children. This book has many great teaching points for children on the basis of morals and character. Perfect for school-aged elementary children!

Another wonderful book! This one is about a little boy named Omar who snatches a piece of yummy baklava from the doorman of his building. He struggles with the guilt and dreams that baklava is falling from the sky! (My kids found this funny and slightly scary lol) He confides in his mom, who helps him with rectifying the situation and making more baklava for the doorman, who initially thought the cat ate it! The story is based on the hadith of the Prophet (pbuh): “follow a bad deed with a good deed to erase it..” I love the warm illustrations and cultural references that seem to indicate that the story is set in Egypt. This a must read and my kids loved it; it is perfect for ages 5 and up!

Shifa Safadi

Great read for kids on inculcating honesty.

-

Azzam

It was amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aysha Hussain

I love this book because it gently opens the door for my children and I to discuss topics like honesty, remorse, and forgiveness on a much deeper level. There's a subtle nudging of not only the children owning up to their mistakes, but for the adults in their lives to be kind, gentle, and wise in the way they deal with their children's mistakes.

-

Duaa Haggag

This is another of Asmaa's book that my daughter frequently requests. I enjoy reading it and love all the beautiful lessons in it. I think it's important to show children less than perfect characters who can fix their mistakes. I appreciate the way the adult characters in the story react to the child's mistake and is a good reminder to us parents to respond with love and encourage repentance and action to fix the mistake.

-

NH

Kids enjoyed this sweet book, and were def able to relate to the characters; and the tough lesson of honesty, and the courage it takes to admit a mistake, apologize for it, and make it up to the person (and what's better than baklawa for that) =)

-

Hibz

We love this book! We love that's it's based on a Hadith, we love that it teaches lessons about fixing mistakes and erasing a bad deed with a good one, we love the delicious baklava references, and we love the heartfelt illustrations. All combined, this is a powerful title that draws you in immediately. Couldn't recommend it more highly - we've bought it as gifts, too.

It’s really amazing when a book can connect to a child and allow them to explain their feelings, that are sometimes difficult to explain. After we read this exquisite story, my little one understood guilt on a deeper level. She explained to me she felt similar when breaking her sisters Lego structure (on accident) the night before and resolved to make her a new one and admit her mistake. I truly believe books are much more than entertainment, they are a way for children to understand the world around them, and to understand themselves. I cannot say enough about this beautiful story. I am so grateful for it being the vehicle for my daughter to understand that mistakes are ok- we follow it up with good! SubhanAllah. I have explained that to my kids so many times with dry examples and as they stifled their yawns—haha!but this illustrates exactly what I’ve been trying to inculcate within, to never despair at Allahs mercy, he erases our sins through good.

-

Alina Hasan

This is a beautiful story based on a Prophetic Hadith (peace be upon him). The lessons, the characters, behaviors and emotions all relatable to both kids and parents. I love that the mother is portrayed as hardworking, compassionate and God-conscious. I also love the setting of this book and the illustrations of the buildings and streets and that old plastic chair are spot on. The fact that the story is centered on backlava is such a creative and delicious choice! Jazakum Allahu khairan!

Anum

There is something about Asmaa Hussein's books that captures my children's attention immediately. A simple story about honesty and learning to tell the truth, fix our mistakes, and forgive that any child can relate to. The characters are relatable and the illustrations are great!

-

Tuqa

This sweet book lends a great lesson on honesty, self control and the importance of apologies when we’ve done something wrong. We love the illustrations and always end up craving baqlawa by the end of it 😂 My child (2 1/2) sleeps with this book, every single night. I think that’s the best review ever ☺️

-

Zahra

I loved how this book took an ordinary problem and really helped the child learn through gentleness and guidance. There’s no typical reprimanding of the child for their mistakes. The child gently learns by being shown and taking part in fixing their mistake of stealing. Loved reading this book to my kids and I recommend it for your kids to gently teach the art of fixing our mistakes

-

Sana

My kids love the fun story of the baklava-loving Omar and how he fixes his mistake. I loved how his mom helps him apply the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in such a natural, kind, and meaningful way! Ruqaya’s Bookshelf books have brought diversity to our bookshelves and Snatched is no exception as it transports you to modern day Cairo, Egypt through its beautiful illustrations. Thank you & Jazaki Allahu khayran for this family favorite!

-

Angie

Oh, what’s not to love about “snatched”! So relatable. Such a great lesson for our kids (and a reminder for us parents as well! Follow a bad deed with a good one, it erases it). We LOVE the cultural backdrop of the book, my girls ask me questions around that and it opens up the avenue for such wonderful conversation and a dialogue about different cultures. This is true as well for “Bismillah soup.” Representation matters. Diversity matters. This wonderful book celebrates and showcases both. Brilliantly.

-

Sara

The premise of this story is such a common issue that all kids go through at some point, so to see it not only addressed to honestly, but in such a creative and gentle way was absolutely wonderful. I love the authentic cultural references sprinkled throughout the story and the illustrations - my parents are from Egypt, and the language and imagery in the book brought me right back to Cairo! And the best part is how the whole story all ties back to such a simple lesson - when you do something wrong - even if it’s stealing! - you can always erase a bad deed by doing a good deed.
