Beautifully written and illustrated books! Ruqa-ya's Bookshelf has filled a huge void in our community by bringing Muslim children's books with moral values that children actually enjoy reading and listening to.
- Hina Salim

This is a wonderful Islamic take on a story I used to love as a kid: Stone Soup. Amazing book, my kids love it.

We love this book so much in our house! We read it on a daily, my kids have the story memorized and if I ever make a mistake while reading they correct me in an instant! This book is so so loved some pages are getting worn and that almost never happens! This was our first book I purchased from Ruqaya's Bookshelf and since then I've purchased many others and will continue to purchase until I own them all 😊

We received this as a gift for my son's aqeeqah and as he grew up, this book easily became his favorite. We've read it so many times, I can probably recite it from memory. May Allah bless the writer, artist and person who gifted us thos book years ago.

-

My kids and I absolutely adore this book. Especially since my daughter has the same name as the baby and their uncle is called Hassan too 😂. We have reread it so many times and we still do. It’s a family favourite. Jzk khayran Asma

My first book by this author. Read it with my 4 year old and was moved by the words and narration. She loves the book and asks for it every day. She even plays pretend to make bismillah soup at home. Highly recommend

My kids have had this story since 2015 I think, when my youngest was 3 years old. At that age, he quickly memorized the story from how much he "read" it! Now he's almost 9 and still loves reading it. He said "This is by Asmaa Hussein... I love this author." <3 This story is filled with so much meaning and it almost makes me cry reading it! What a treasure this is for our children.

-

Tuqa

A beautiful conversation starter on barakah, tawakkul and community living.

-

This is an exciting read for children (and adults) as the main character Hassan takes them along with him, to fulfill his intention of making a feast for his mother. This book powefully introduces intentions tp young hearts and how important it is to remember Allah at the beginning of our actions. It also teaches children how we must remember to trust in Allah and assign our matters to Him. Another important takeaway is that we take the means and rest is in the hands of Allah. In the story Hassan says Bismillah, makes an intention to make a soup and Allah provides for him from where he does not expect. The need for Muslim books for our children with high morals such as this one, can not be overlooked. May Allah swt assist the author to continue her efforts to serve the community. Ameen

Bismillah soup is hands down my kids favourite book. My 7 and 4-year-olds love the Hasan, and the efforts he goes through for his mom's feast. The story is timeless in its telling and this iteration is very relevant to our deen and the kids enjoyed having a character they can relate with in regards to identity.

-

Lulu Alam

This wonderful story is about a boy named Hassan who promised his mom to make a full feast of food while all their food has been ruined when the fridge was not working. His family didn't have any remaining food left and he goes to Sheikh Omar to borrow some rice where he promises his mother to do a feast. He succeeds in doing the feast eventually with the power of Bismillah. The story is very captivating and it actually shows the power of believing in Allah, praying while working hard to achieve your goal. The way it describes the recipe to the soup is really very interesting and you can definitely play games pretending to cook bismillah soup. I loved the fact that they stopped whatever they were doing to perform the daily prayers. I loved the display of Muslim characters in such a beautiful way. Highly recommended for children above 4 years old.

-

Mariam

My child, 5 year old, constantly requests this book. It's a beautiful story, uplifting and the illustrations are realistic and enjoyable to look at. I love that the author put in the Hadith at the back of the book and vocabulary for words the child, or parent, might not know.

-

May Allah bless this book! It really shows how if we come together we would be so much more successful. Mashallah

We read this book a few nights before Ramadan last year and my children insisted we must make Bismillah soup for the blessed month! They loved the warmth it brings of responsibility sharing and ofcourse, Trust in Allah. One of their favorites!

-

Let me start off by saying we are Somalians. So reading this book by my children brought soo much appreciation and happiness. I could sense the excitement. Thank you soo much for creating this amazing book!!! you have no idea, how you made my kids feel. We can forget what people said but we can NEVER forget how someone made us feel even years later. I asked my kiddos what duaa do you make for Asmaa? Fatimah, 6, said "That she becomes the best seller book in the world, and that she makes $5 dollars every sec" :))) the five-sec one got me cracking up but I loved it!

We made soup today and read loud the BISMILLAH SOUP BOOK from rukyasbookshelf. My children say they learnt a lesson that Allah's name should always be recited to get barakah in life and they also learned share food with others. This book is amazing with beautiful illustrations. The book is simple yet interesting , exciting to read a loud. It really gives a moral that it's allah is who provide s us even on the day we think we do not have anything today. bismillah soup dinner at our home.. after we have got this book my children only want bismillah soup.. he says no soup should be cooked. My 3-year-old loves this book about a young boy who hosts a feast for his community, relying only on trust in Allah and the generosity of his village. A wonderful story about beginning with bismillah, and the barakah that brings. A kid favorite!

-

This book is robust and beautiful and makes you want to eat a hearty bowl of soup! This spin on the classic tale of stone soup is absolutely beautiful. Asmaa Hussein truly has a way of tugging at heart strings!! MashaAllah ❤️

This is a lovely story about a young enthusiastic boy who loves his mother and family. With trust in Allah, help with Shaykh Omar and hard work he is able to host a great feast for not just his family but an entire community. Trust in Allah might be a difficult concept for children to grasp but this book makes it easier to talk about what trusting in Allah means. At the end of the book there is relevant Hadith about Prophet Muhammad ( peace be upon him) explaining about reliance on Allah. Trust, love, family, sense of community and sharing are the themes interwoven in this short story. Plus the illustrations are colorful and engaging. I appreciate the fact that different ethnicities and races are depicted. This time it’s about a Somalian boy and his family. Jazakum Allahu khairan!

All three of my children absolutely love this warming story about having a little faith. They love ‘making’ Bismillah soup after reading it, as a fun craft to reinforce the main lesson they’ve learned. I love that, with Ruqqaya’s Bookshelf, they learn Islamic values, morals and concepts through engaging stories that are modern and relatable!

-

Zahra

I was really excited about this book. Being a new Muslim, looking for good Islamic stories for my son is top priority. The story was very sweet. Very nice lesson in faith, prayer and sharing as a community , as well as love for your parents. My 6yr. old son has me reading this every few days, he never tires. It’s nice to be able to relate to “going to the mosque” and confiding in the Imam. I can see this becoming a classic. Great job Asmaa Hussein, it was an honor. May Allah bless you for the wonderful story helping my little one become aware of the teachings of the Quran.

I read this book with my 3-year-old daughter, and really liked it. It’s a sweet story that includes good morals but in a nice and subtle way; it isn’t a ‘boring Islamic story’ that talks about principles in a bland way. It’s rather an interesting tale with a good pace that keeps my daughter engaged and teaches her through the different things that happen in the story about good Islamic values. I really like this book and look forward to more books by the author!

It’s a little embarrassing to admit that I was tearing up, reading a children’s book. What a beautiful way of defining Tawakkal Allah and how giving (even when you have nothing) brings so much barakah. I loved the fact that the imam was cooking with a boy (both male) – something that people neither expect from an imam nor a little boy. And the representation of an imam having a great relationship with youth. So much so that the boy isn’t only going to him for ideas but also preparing a large feast – having fun with him.

Although this was a very sweet story, it seemed to read a little long at times. Still a great book about community togetherness and Muslim unity. I am sure my kids will enjoy reading it for the years to come.

Bismillah Soup by Asmaa Hussain is a tale of youthful enthusiasm and trust in God. It’s the story of a community pulled together to fulfill one boy’s promise to his mother. This story will leave you ruminating on the struggles of many families and is a great lead in to discussions about the reality of food insecurity and other daily challenges in many countries. I’m not ashamed to admit I struggled to read the final pages through my tears. This story has just enough repetition to keep the flow and engage small readers, without getting monotonous for the adults. The stunning illustrations by Amina Khan using large smiles and exaggerated body language perfectly capture young Hasan’s youthful exuberance. I highly recommend this book! What a beautiful children’s book with such a great lesson! Bismillah Soup is very well-written with a sweet and funny main character, Hassan. I love how it shows the unity of his local community and the love and respect for parents. The illustrations are fabulous and vibrant. Highly recommend this book for young children and it should be a staple in all Islamic School classrooms. Aya Khalil Educator and journalist http://Www.ayakhalil.blogspot.com

This is a really beautiful book. This was so cute because it held the attention of me barely pre-k boy even though it was more in line with my 5 yr old. I would say this is pre-K (if they can sit still) through elementary school. I fell in love with it because -I learned Somali words -it is a new twist on and old folktale -Islamic images throughout the book of Muslims, prayer and the main place in the book takes place in the masjid -surprise ending for the kids -SENSE OF COMMUNITY -FULFILLMENT OF ALLAH’S BLESSINGS -sharing A lot of Muslim themed books for kids haven’t been a high quality, as far as I’m concerned. But this book is different & I have hope that the industry is starting to change.

Cold Person

You will make your own Bismillah Soup after reading this book! Wonderful story. Basically, a spin on the classic, “Stone Soup”. Nice illustrations. My son went around for weeks asking me to make bismillah soup and we have made it together many times.
